About this deal

In 1965, OUP published a matching edition of the deuterocanonical and apocryphal books as well as a version of the OAB including them. The Oxford Annotated Bible ( OAB), published also as the New Oxford Annotated Bible ( NOAB), is a study Bible published by the Oxford University Press. I haven't read any other edition of the Bible (besides what they gave us in religious ed when I was a kid) so I can't compare, but I would recommend this one! Some of the philosophy seems to be inspired by Plato, to the point some lines are copied word for word. Holland is reading this year (The New Oxford Annotated Bible), so I decided to grab a copy of that as well.

Bible scholarship is a very interesting field, even - or even especially if - you’re not a believer. Although I treasure my old KJV and Rheimes-Douay, the NOAB 4th Edition is the best biblical investment I've ever made. The sections on "injustice," "family values," "cruelty and violence," and "women" fail to account for an important concept—the Bible was written to reform our souls, not our societies. Unfortunately I still can't see how decent, normal, intelligent people can fall for what is inside it's far too numerous pages. Despite how ancient the text is, new discoveries continue to be made; the NSRV fifth edition is only five years old.Michael Coogan is Lecturer in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament at Harvard Divinity School and Director of Publications for the Harvard Semitic Museum. Michael Coogan is Lecturer on Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Harvard Divinity School and Director of Publications for the Harvard Semitic Museum. Genesis and Numbers are a huge yawn fest, I'm not even sure what the lengthy genealogies and census information had to do with the fisherman because everybody dies in the end anyway.

Color maps, timelines, parallel texts, weights and measures, calendars, and other helpful tables help navigate the biblical world. He has written for The Forward and The Jerusalem Report, has appeared on the Television series “Mysteries of the Bible,” was heard on the National Public Radio show “All Things Considered,” and was interviewed on “Fresh Air” by Terry Gross. A reliable companion for both personal and classroom study, the Baylor Annotated Study Bible follows in the long-standing mission of Baylor University: to serve as a faithful witness to the liberating, transformative good news of the gospel. Each chapter of the Bible is preceded by an introduction, placing the writing in a historical context. This is a great bible - the notes at the bottom of each page explain the difficult to understand parts of the readings. Also I came away with a new appreciation for the wisdom and literature in some of the minor Old Testament books and even more so the Apocrypha.

Then halfway through they just introduce a new protagonist out of nowhere who dies within 4 chapters and they spend the rest of the book trying to work out what his deal was. This humanist approach also applies to the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), the text used by the NOAB.I bought this for the broad minded ecumenical approach of the study elements, the essays etc rather than the specific translation. It appears this is decided solely on the basis of "scholarly weight" rather than actual facts - a sadly common fault in today's culture. Most non-Christian critics would counter that Christians, especially fundamentalists, rarely do that themselves, and that context is by definition irrelevant if we are to take the Bible literally as literalists would insist. I admit that I skimmed some parts, and by the middle the only thing that kept me going through to the end was bragging rights; being able to say that I have in fact read the whole thing.
