Nose: A wonderful, intense, ‘dancing’ nose, with lots of different, intertwined aromas – powerful, oily peat, dark chocolate, smoked fish, hints of seaweed, and a curious, sharp herbal note.

The committee’s release has a hint more complexity with the herbal dark chocolate notes, while the regular release is more focused on the salty and spicy elements on the drink. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. And this whisky from has then been married with regular bourbon cask matured Ardbeg and bottled for Fèis Ìle 2017 at 46%. While wood from different locations will give off slightly different flavors, I have to wonder if this is more of a marketing ploy than anything else as the end result just seems to be a fairly standard set of Ardbeg flavors. Has that oily, maritime Ardbeg peat moment with some additional vanilla-ish sweetness from those Black Sea oak casks.

It’s a slightly sweet smoke but it lacks the slightly savory element that I’d associate with barbecue.

Seemingly lasting forever, with deep, deep, almost subterranean flavours of clove, tar and rich toffee. This lot is being sold by either; 1) a non-UK seller or 2) a VAT Registered Business, and is therefore subject to VAT.

There’s an slightly wet grassy note as well which, combined with the brine, reminds me of standing on a grassy hill near the ocean. Good job on this release but allow me to give a big warning to those who awaits the general release of Kelpie on Ardbeg day 2017: I don’t think it will be up to this version.

Waves of spicy, black pepper with water, creamy coffee notes bubble to the surface, along with Ardbeg's classic pine resin and smoked fudge. Finish: Seemingly lasting forever, with deep, deep, almost subterranean flavours of clove, tar and rich coffee. I have to admit that up to Ardbog, the 2013 Ardbeg Day release, I was very happy with the special releases but I admit there had been a lapse of faith after the last few releases with Perpetuum being rock bottom, so when I heard on Kelpie, the 2017 bottling I was again very skeptic and thought to myself: Oh come on, what’s that wood voodoo of using casks from oak that grows in a remote region in Russia? Almost light at the beginning, dry, a bit shy, with a sourish fruitiness, linseed oil, a bit musty, the oak is not directly recognizable, but more associable with the musty sourish.
