About this deal

It follows five teenaged orphans who are abducted and placed in the house of stairs as an unethical experiment in social dynamics. Elizabeth faces a genetic heritage of Huntington's chorea, while getting her career as novelist on track. In true young adult fiction style, House of Stairs brings readers right into the action, as we follow one of the five blindfolded characters as they are inserted into the unusual structure. Her sense of self-righteousness over the other characters, even though they are all on the same level, seems to be what brings about this attitude.

They discover that it only works when the lights are flashing and it begins to whisper unintelligibly. Once the kids and the reader begin to understand what is happening to them the story becomes truly frightening. It's free to take part, but if you aren't paying to take part in something, in a product, then 'you are the product. Five strangers - all orphans, all sixteen years of age - are released, blindfolded, into a mammoth gleaming white room full of stairs.

Three main characters, including the first person narrator, Elizabeth Vitch, battle loneliness, memories and an uncertain future. Five sixteen year-old orphans - two boys, three girls - are put into a giant room, with no visible walls, ceiling or floor. It’s random stuff that often has no bearing on the story but it gives us a glimpse of what’s outside the room without ever actually letting us out. Then we have Peter and Abigail, who are comparable to one another; thin, soft spoken, in need of someone to lead them along. If we allow ourselves to be fooled into thinking that an evil act is somehow the right thing to do, then we have lost a very important part of ourselves.

Part One covers chapters 1—10, with each chapter focusing on one of the five characters, allowing the reader to discover their thoughts and see the current scene from their perspective. Love Makes You Evil: Though Abigail starts out as a kind, sweet person, her attraction to Oliver gives him power over her, and ends up just as warped as the others at the end of the novel. First-Name Basis: All of the five main characters are only addressed by their first names, with the exception of Blossom who reveals her surname to be Pilkington. This story has subtle and tantalizing hints at being set in the future after a cataclysmic event of some kind, with the mentioning of gas masks being worn near roads, synthetic food, and only the rich and powerful being able to reside in houses with real grass, whereas the mass of civilisation are housed in residential megastructures. It is always understated, laissez fair events, in which controversial topics are seamlessly woven into the narrative without fanfare or bells going haywire.HOUSE OF STAIRS reflects Cold War fears that the government was conducting dehumanizing experiments on human beings to advance the war effort.
