About this deal

It's no coincidence that he's manufactured some media interest in this newly launched (during Wimbledon) book, by talking up the disparity in playing standards between men and women. Now the undisputed elder statesman of tennis, McEnroe has won over his critics as a matchless commentator and analyst at Wimbledon and other Grand Slam tournaments - with outspoken views on the modern game and its top players. In several chapters, he comes off as a self-deprecating husband and father, but it wouldn’t be authentic McEnroe if the book were about being sorry. I would love to see the pros playing with wooden racquets, if only for a tournament, or even one match.

I work full time which means that my reading is limited to short bus and tube rides, and snatches of moments in my lunchbreak, so I haven't got very far through the book yet, but what I have read, I have enjoyed. I am paying it forward by passing this book along to a friend and sports enthusiast who I think will enjoy it too. However, it’s still an autobiography, and therefore I can’t help but feel he might have left out the bits that he didn’t like. So I was hanging out with Vitas Gerulaitis – literally the coolest dude who has ever lived – when I met Andy Warhol for the first time.He is also well known for his on court behavior that got him in trouble with tennis authorities and umpires. By reference (in McEnroe's case) to the very visible, and audible, public figure on our screens and radios almost every day? There's no People Magazine feature story about life with Tatum O'Neal, but there is a lot of discussion about how the drive to get to the top was lost shortly after reaching number one.

In a story about working with Larry David, he manages to mention in passing “Jerry Seinfeld, who I thought was great (he lives one floor below me in our New York building now, so he’s not done too badly)”. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. John McEnroe doesn't pull any punches and doesn't sugar-coat anything, but that's what makes it such a compelling read.

You Cannot Be Serious is McEnroe at his most personal, a no-holds-barred examination of Johnny Mac, the kid from Queens, and his "wild ride" through the world of professional tennis at a boom time when players were treated like rock stars. That is the overriding theme that I had while reading this book – that McEnroe wants everyone to know how many other famous people he has known and what he has done with them. To be honest, I’m not that keen on (auto)biographies, since I prefer the escapism that good fiction offers. McEnroe himself either withdrew or deliberately “choked” in several matches due to his tennis “depression”.He thinks Warhol is overrated and, despite commissioning him to paint him and his ex-wife Tatum O’Neal, McEnroe mostly remembers the Factory guru as someone who cramped his style when he tried to hit on models at Studio 54. Quello che non si capisce è da dove gli venga tanta irruenza linguacciuta: a lui giocare piaceva, i genitori non sono stati particolarmente oppressivi, e liquida acciacchi e malanni come normale routine. He comes over as a single minded individual who cares deeply for his family and I’m glad he has evidently found happiness with his wife Patti and their 6 children. Or that he is a major collector and dealer of contemporary art, and hobnobbed with Andy Warhol and other celebrities as a young star in New York. Ivan had so far lost four Grand Slam finals in a row and I sure as hell wasn't planning on breaking that run for him by handing him his first title.
