About this deal

Featuring a thick baffle along the length of the side zip, as well as a huge baffle and lofty hood around the top of the bag, it’s built to keep you warm in colder climates – and in my experience, it does just that.

It comes with a host of premium features like insulated baffles and ultra-comfort lining for a great night’s sleep. Im currently in the market for a new sleeping bag as my current one (Ray Mears Woodlore 4 season) is too heavy and bulky for anything more than a 2 day hike and camp. One thing we have gotten used to after a night in the Leviathan is the inevitable plucking of feathers off our baselayers the morning after. I’m certain you’ll be alright in a standard Rab Ascent length at 6’1”as that’s within their recommendation. The OEX is duck, the high-end Rabs are goose and the Ascent falls somewhere in the middle with a mixture of duck and goose. But after three years and over 50 nights in it, the bag hasn’t lost any of its warmth or loft whatsoever.

The OEX Leviathan EV 900 is a lightweight and compact 4 season sleeping bag that will keep you warm in temperatures down to around -16°C, and still safe as low as -38°C. That OK, and comfort temp of minus 9 seems reasonable, but I do worry about the 'extreme tempreture' cited, which is minus 38!It’s easy to throw this thing into the bottom of any backpack, and you can vacuum seal it in a dry bag to mould it into an optimal shape. In our experience, we’ve comfortably slept in this thing in nothing but baselayers down to -5 or -6 degrees Celsius, though we wouldn’t push it further than that without a liner or without wearing a warm jacket inside.

Very warm despite its low weight and bulk, the OEX Leviathan EV Hydrodown 900 Sleeping Bag is ideal for temperatures around -9°C, but will keep you comfortable down to -16°C. You need fewer feathers the higher the fill power, so down products made with down of a higher fill power (750 or 900) will normally be lighter, more packable and pricier as a result. Very light, good product, but it broke when I used the zipper for the first time, which made me unable to close the quilt all night. The compression stuff sack lets you pack it down to a very compact and manageable size for packing and carrying. Who you are, what you eat, what you are lying on, who else is in the tent with you - it all counts, probably far more than the bag rating.

Experience the lightweight and insulating benefits of a down sleeping bag with a hydrophobic finish that maintains its performance in damp conditions. You’re then left with a mouldable pouch that you can manipulate into whatever shape you want — for conveniently fitting into any compartment in your pack. For UK use, however, we think the bag delivers enough warmth to reasonably be considered a true 4-season sleeping bag, and we’re happy with its performance overall. It would be nice to be able to afford Gucci touring and camping gear, I'm not a wealthy person and try to budget my gear accordingly.

One dlight niggle was the factory that it was easy to catch the baffle when zipping up but nothing more than a minor point in ky view. I think we are looking at duck down and goose down being on opposite ends of a warmth/cost spectrum. The 900gsm / 600 fill power duck down insulation has a hydrophobic coating that makes it very practical for winter camping – it retains its loft if it gets damp, so it still keeps you warm in cold and clammy conditions.
