About this deal

Transplanted cuttings and nursery plants need even moisture during their transition to the landscape, but should never be in soggy ground. Use sterilized pruners to cut a 4- to 6-inch length of stem that has at least four pairs of leaves. This is best done during the active growing season, no later than midsummer. If you’re planting Winged Spindle trees/Burning Bushes in spring, summer or dry weather, water well and regularly for the first few months. Make sure to keep an eye on young plants and increase watering if there are periods of hot and dry weather. If you’re planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. Don’t apply herbicides unless you are sure the chemicals are registered for control of kochia scoparia grass. Complicating the matter even more is the fact that kochia is resistant to some herbicides, including 2,4-D. This is a good time to seek the advice of your local Agricultural Extension Agent. On the flip side, conditions that are too wet may also invite trouble, in the form of a disease called twig blight.

Strip off the bottom leaves, then plant the cutting in a small pot filled with moist seed-starter mix. (Some gardeners find it useful to place the planted cutting in a loosely secured plastic bag to hold in moisture.) A blend of ordinary potting mix and perlite or sand makes a good rooting medium. Whether grown as a hedge, grouped together, or left as a single specimen, burning bushes can become quite the focal point of any area. So, is burning bush bad? Where it is invasive, yes, you can say it is bad. It outcompetes native species, plants that native wildlife need for food and shelter.Rudy Haag’ is a slow growing diminutive form of the bush that will get only 5 feet (1.5 m.) tall in 15 years.

Euonymus alatus‘Blade Runner’:‘Blade Runner’ grows only slightly lower than the species. However, it stands out with its cork strips of up to 2 cm wide. These are especially noticeable in the winter when there are no leaves, making it a real eye-catcher even in the cold season.GIVES NEW PLANTS THE BEST POSSIBLE START - Apply rootgrow by sprinking the appropriate amount into the planting hole, then place the plant in the hole ensuring the roots are touching the granules. Once applied your plants will begin to thrive better than before, improving plant establishment and subsequently bettering flowering and fruiting. And finally, you might want to read up on deterring deer, because they find the foliage of both E. alatus and E. atropurpureus to be very appetizing. Best Uses for Burning Bushes Aptly named, this burning bush’s claim to fame is the show-stopping scarlet hue of its autumn foliage. However, a better name might be the banned red bush. Early spring and fall are the best times to plant a nursery shrub. When you buy one, it may be about 18 months old and sold in a quart-size pot, or two years of age or older and growing in a two-gallon container.

Burning bush care also includes occasional pruning to keep the size down and remove any broken or damaged branches. The natural shape of the bush is appealing, so pruning is not necessary, but if you wish to trim the plant, do so in very early spring before leaves appear. Non-native E. alatus grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8. It can reach heights of 15 to 20 feet with a spread of eight to 12 feet. Compact varieties may be as small as six to eight feet tall and four to six feet wide. Water well, and thereafter whenever the top two inches of the soil feel dry. Use a moisture meter to help with this task. REQUIRES A SINGLE APPLICATION - Rootgrow only needs to be applied once, a single treatment will generally last the entire lifespan of your plants.

Kochia control may also involve use of pre-emergent herbicides, which provide control before seedlings emerge, or a post-emergent herbicide that controls the plant after seedlings emerge and are less than 4 inches (10 cm.) tall. Many people mix pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides to provide more complete control. Set the pot in a spot with bright, indirect light and keep the potting mix moist until roots have developed (you will feel resistance when you tug on the stem). This can take several weeks.

CONTAINS MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI - A naturally occuring organism, Mycorrhizal Fungi has been benefiting plants in our world for millions of years. Rootgrow is a granular feed that is commonly used to promote vigourous and robust growth, even in poor soils In large areas where burning bush has spread, heavy equipment or herbicide may be needed for management. Alternatives to Burning Bush It depends on where you are, but generally yes, burning bush is considered invasive. Some states, like New Hampshire, have actually prohibited using this shrub. It has become widespread along the East Coast and in much of the Midwest. Most often burning bush is spared from diseases. However, some pests such as ermine moths can become a nuisance. It is not necessary to prune Euonymus alatus. The shrub grows rather slowly and its natural growth habit, reminiscent of an umbrella, creates a wonderful effect. If you still want to prune your winged spindle bush, for example, because it has grown too large, you can safely reach for the pruning shears. Topiary or hedge trimming is usually well tolerated by the burning bush. Another option is to grow the burning bush as a multi-stemmed standard. Thinning burning bush is also not necessary, but you can remove dead, died off wood. The best time for pruning is in late winter or early spring.

You can plant a dwarf form of the bush in small spaces or to minimize maintenance, especially since the plant’s 15-foot (4.5 m.) height may be too great for some landscape applications. There are two excellent cultivars, which produce smaller, dwarf forms of this bright Euonymous:
