About this deal

These three F1.4 prime lenses for X Mount will be available at SIGMA Authorized Dealers nationwide in April 2022.

What is also great is I found the autofocus to be excellent. The 30mm f1.4 Contemporary uses a stepping motor that is fast, and essentially silent in operation. During my time with the 30mm f1.4, I found the autofocus to be completely compatible with the Fujifilm X Series system, and therefore, drama free. No lens case is included in the box, but finding a case for a common lens form factor is not challenging. Typically, lenses are not as sharp at their wide-open apertures as they are when stopped down one or two stops, and at f/2, this lens is really sharp. Note that images from most cameras require some level of sharpening, but too-high sharpness settings are destructive to image details and hide the deficiencies of a lens. The Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens has an aesthetically pleasing design that maintains tight tolerances and has a quality finish. I can’t seem to find a lot of comparisons between the two. The Sigma is always compared to the 1.4 version of the Fuji.

Sigma claims that "The vast majority of contaminants work their way into lenses through the rear mount, so as long as they aren’t abused, these lenses will provide many years of trouble-free use, even in moderate weather. The lens measures 64.8×73.3mm and weighs 265g, which certainly isn’t going to inhibit your ability to carry it around with you all day. It has a 52mm filter thread, and usefully, the lens employs internal focusing, so should you use an ND grad or polarising filter with it, you will not have to worry about the front turning or extending when focusing. An APS-C 45mm lens (on a full-frame body) provides an angle of view too wide for tightly framed headshot portraits (a too-close perspective is required), but 45mm is an excellent choice for wider portrait framing, especially full-body portraits. Changing this frequently used camera setting requires the use of the menu system (or a camera switch on some models). The front lens element features high-refractive index, high-dispersion glass for extra power and a shorter overall lens length. To optimize the lens for mirrorless cameras, two aspherical lens elements help ensure outstanding image quality and overall compactness. The SIGMA 30mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary features SIGMA’s inner focus technologies, while lighter lens elements in the focus lens group make possible a more compact actuator. Moreover, this lens offers outstanding stability whether the photographer is shooting handheld or has the camera placed on a surface. Structurally, the lens features materials and parts that contribute to its compact, lightweight structure. In summary, this is an unprecedented lens that combines outstanding optical performance with exceptional portability and usability.

Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Build Quality:

In terms of weight, the 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary comes in at just 9.7 oz / 275 g, which makes it a great lens to carry around. It’s also never front heavy, when it’s mounted on my X-T3, which is what I used to test the 30mm f1.4. If you compare the 30mm f1.4 to the Fujifilm counterparts, it weighs a little more than the XF 35mm f1.4, which is 6.6 oz / 187 g. However, it’s lighter than the XF 33mm f1.4, which is 12.7 oz / 360 g, so this means the 30mm f1.4 is right in the middle, in terms of weight. Now you see why one would choose a Sigma lens over the Fujinon: to save some cash. They’re priced significantly cheaper while offering something similar. If you can afford it, the Fujinon lenses are better, but if not, this is a solid alternative that’s friendlier on the wallet. There are also lesser-expensive Fujinon options worth considering, which maybe don’t have the tech-sheet wow factor, but are otherwise fantastic lenses that you’re sure to be happy with.
