He played all over the UK and Europe on a regular basis until he stopped to focus more on his family. He has also collaborated with original band member Steve Waddington and others on new material, most of which remains unreleased. After the completion of Happiness but prior to its release, "The Sun Rising" was issued as a single and became the band's commercial breakthrough. [3] It entered the UK Singles Chart in October 1989 and peaked at number 26 the following month. [9] "Hello" was issued as the follow-up single and became an international hit, [2] receiving much airplay and earning the duo a reputation as potential "successors to the Pet Shop Boys," recalls Lewis. [4] In the UK, the single entered the charts in January 1990 and peaked at number 19 in February. [9] The reissue version of "Your Love Takes Me Higher" became the album's third hit single reaching number 39 in March. [9] A further single, "Time After Time", reached number 46 on the chart in June. [9] Keyboard magazine, who noted the eclectic nature of Happiness, also noted the diversity between the album's run of singles, saying they "included a tune built around a haunting Renaissance vocal riff, a phone-book recitation of rhymed names, a thumping house cut and, most recently, 'Time After Time', a medium-tempo trance/dance number featuring a real violin section and an acoustic piano solo." [5]

Above all, its smiley-faced optimism encapsulates the spirit of a time when Brit Pop went supernova: Manchester was on the rise and you could dance all night without being arrested. The liner notes thank 'anyone who has felt that 5am loving feeling' and 'Scarlet Beautiful' 's chorus is simply 'love/love/love'." Within a few months, Marsh suggested they leave and start their own band. Calling themselves The Journey Through in 1983, they recruited bass player Timothy Havard [1] and began writing and rehearsing; occasionally playing live, with keyboard player Bill Anderson. Waddington was singer and principal songwriter. By early 1984 they were The Beloved; Waddington still the frontman, but Marsh singing on several songs and Havard and Marsh beginning to take over most of the songwriting. [1] By the autumn Marsh was the lead singer, still drumming on demos and in rehearsal. He waited outside the BBC, Portland Place one night and gave a demo tape to John Peel. Within a fortnight they had been booked for a session. Marsh's school friend, Guy Gausden, had played drums with them at a couple of gigs and they persuaded him to join as a permanent member. Having barely rehearsed, and with two brand new songs out of four, they debuted as a four-piece on BBC Radio 1 on 8 January 1985. Robert Smith's merry men jumped on the dance bandwagon with this album of remixes, which bore a hit in the baggied-up version of the classic Close To Me. Time After Time I thought was beautiful, but it's a shame of time, place and people rather than the song itself that it now sounds dated. But Jon and Steve did describe it as their partial attempt at throwaway pop as The Pet Shop Boys. Still, the arrangement has great elements for a mix as does Hello.

"The Beloved: Happiness: Special Edition". Classic Pop. No.64. p.94. This was followed in February 1990 by their first studio album, Happiness, the first and only album Marsh and Waddington released as a duo, [1] and the first consisting wholly of previously unreleased new songs, from which the hit single " Hello" was also released. "Hello" became The Beloved's first international hit, and reached number 19 in the UK. [4] This song's lyrics mostly consist of names of real or fictional people, groups and institutions, representing the band's wide-ranging selection of heroes, villains, and a few of their friends. Saint Peter and Saint Paul, house music with Kym Mazelle and Paris Grey; literature with Jean Paul Sartre rhymed with the writer and disgraced former politician Jeffrey Archer; talk radio with Brian Hayes and Marsh's childhood hero, Crystal Palace FC football player Vince Hilaire. The LP included two more singles, a re-release of "Your Love Takes Me Higher," which this time made the UK top 40, [4] and the final cut, " Time After Time", which was only a minor hit in the UK, reaching number 48. [4] The alternative supergroup - which initially featured Kim Deal (Pixies), Tanya Donnelly (Throwing Muses) and Josephine Wiggs (The Perfect Disaster) issued their Steve Albini-produced debut album, which featured When I Was A Painter and a cover of The Beatles' Happiness Is A Warm Gun.

The upper frequencies on Scarlet Beautiful have been squashed so now they are in your face, not extended like on the original pressing. The lyric is quite abstract, fragments of memories from a night in a club within clouds of dry ice. The line “learn to love your secret life” describes what life was like for us then, with dance music culture still firmly underground.a b c d e f Larkin, Colin, ed. (2011). "Beloved".
