I could plow through it for the sake of my book club, but why put myself through 3 or 4 hours of angst and misery, reading about a wildly dysfunctional family trying to create their own utopia in the jungles of the Honduras? Plus, it has River Phoenix in it, and I had the biggest crush on him when I was a kid, so that might be tainting my perception, but I don't think so. Both he and Harrison Ford give great performances in the film. River even said “I did my best work in The Mosquito Coast. I know it wasn't such a big hit, but for me it was more meaningful than anything else I'd ever done.” (I don't have a date for that quote, so I'm not sure how many other movies he's comparing it to.) Strange that two movies I like better than the book have River in it. (The other is Stand by Me which is based on Stephen King's novella The Body.) The Fox family crossing the desert from California into Mexico with the help of a coyote in the AppleTV+ series, The Mosquito Coast. Paul Theroux applauds this change from his novel: "The irony of someone sneaking into Mexico!" Courtesy of AppleTV+.

Paul Theroux was born in Medford, Massachusetts, the third of seven children, [3] and son of Catholic parents; his mother, Anne (née Dittami), was Italian American, and his father, Albert Eugene Theroux, was of French-Canadian descent. [4] [5] His mother was a former grammar school teacher and painter, [6] and his father was a shoe factory leather salesman for the American Leather Oak company. [6] [7] Theroux was a Boy Scout and ultimately achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Migration (2014-11-09). "Paul Theroux's turning point in Singapore | The Straits Times". www.straitstimes.com . He further commented that he "need[s] happiness to write well." [11] More About Paul Theroux (Malawi 1963–65) – Peace Corps Worldwide". peacecorpsworldwide.org . Retrieved 21 October 2018. The story is told in first person by the man's son. As the story progresses it becomes obvious that his father is out of touch with reality (i.e crazy). Things get tense toward the end of the book.

The Mosquito Coast is an American drama television series developed by Neil Cross and Tom Bissell based on the novel of the same name by Paul Theroux published in 1981. It is also loosely adapted from the 1986 film which starred Harrison Ford. The series stars Justin Theroux, nephew of Paul, and Melissa George in lead roles, with Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman rounding out the main cast. Justin Theroux also serves as executive producer of the series, along with Rupert Wyatt who directed the first two episodes. After failing to find an Indian settlement untouched by the white man along the river, Allie sets off with his gift of ice over the mountains, despite warnings from the Zambu that "They always troubles there. Contrabanders. Shouljers. Feefs. People from Nicaragua way." Taking Charlie and Jerry, they find an Indian settlement which appears to have three English speaking slaves. Father tells the captured men about Jeronimo and compels them to slip away. When the men show up, armed with rifles, Allie realizes that it was the Indians who were being held prisoner by the soldiers, who decide to stay in Jeronimo indefinitely. Allie finds this intrusion unacceptable. The inconsistencies mount in a generally unconvincing series. But the cast is so much better than the material. Melissa George is a standout as the pained mother who often stays silent but says so much more with the tremors in her lips. The young Logan Polish is striking as Dina, the emotionally vulnerable teen whose eyes constantly scan and search as if trying to find something or someone that can make her feel secure, or at least tell her what’s going on. This story evolves around a man who is so fed up with what he perceives as deteriorating quality of life in the United States that he takes his family (wife and four children) to the most isolated place he knows of, the Mosquito Coast on the east coast of Honduras. Once there he goes up river trying to find a place untouched by civilization. He has the gift of having no doubt that he always right. No matter what happens, he insists--and apparently believes it himself--that he's not surprised because he was expecting it all along. Harrison Ford and River Phoenix did a film version, but the novel is better. Harrison does a masterful job portraying a guy who is too smart and independent for the world's bullshit. He makes the character relatable, despite the demonic scourge Allie Fox is to his family. Andreeva, Nellie (September 16, 2019).
