About this deal

Drive belt – Find out if the drive belt is the root of the problem by opening the door and trying to spin the drum. There should be some resistance – if the drum turns easily then the belt might need replacing. If I do the same test on the fan oven element again connecting one probe to the metalwork and the other to the electrical connector and pressed test once more you can see a reading of 7.6 Meg ohms. If your washing machine won't stop vibrating or even moves around the room during a wash, it probably needs levelling out. Every washing machine has to sit level on a flat surface – and if it isn't it will shake, especially during spin cycles. If the washing machine is not heating up the water to its usual heat, or it is heating erratically, it could be a problem with the element.

Some washing machines heat their own water while others draw it from the hot water source. You’ll be able to tell the difference if you have one or two pipes supplying your washing machine. If your washing machine has a leak, it is likely to trip the fuse, RCD or breaker at some point. If this happens, you could dismantle the machine and look for water traces or call in an expert. Clues To What Part Is FaultyAs well as being one of the easiest DIY appliance fixes out there, fixing your washing machine element yourself can save you a lot of money compared to booking a repair or buying a new washing machine. Faulty heating – If the machine turns off in the first half hour, the water may not be heating up correctly, which will signal for the machine to stop mid-cycle. On the other hand, if the cycle stops past 30 minutes the water may be overheating, again forcing the cycle to come to a halt. The most likely cause for this is a faulty thermistor.

This could be caused by a damaged capacitor which can’t draw enough power to start the motor. This normally trips the fuse on the spin cycle because the capacitor cannot perform its main function. Other Causes Unlike a normal multimeter, insulation testers use a much higher voltage to test for a resistance leak. If I press the test button here you can see that the meter attached to the megger is giving a reading well over 500 volts, whereas a multimeter would typically use nine volts to measure.
