About this deal

Marisa Poster, and brothers Teddie and Levi Levenfiche met at Ivy League at the University of Pennsylvania. After six months sourcing the highest quality organic, ceremonial grade matcha from farms across Uji, Japan, they fused the powder with fruit juice for a "refreshing caffeine fix with a stable energy peak". If you’ve ever tried to make matcha at home, you might have started with a store–bought mix. It was probably a yellow–green color and contained additives and sweeteners. If it didn’t have sugar in it already, you probably wanted to add a few spoonfuls to mask the grassy flavor. Unfortunately, this is pretty common in lower–grade matcha—it can be incredibly bitter in its natural state.

Tesco buyer, Libby Lee, said the retailer is excited about a partnership with PerfectTed to grow the natural energy category with a range of “delicious drinks that put functionality and health first.” It was an intense but generally incredible experience appearing on television,” Ms Poster, 25, told the JC. “Even though in the show our appearance is only 13 minutes long, we were actually there for over an hour and a half of pretty intense grilling. It’s critical to know your business inside and out. But we knew this going in and came prepared.” A friend mentioned that matcha was caffeinated and it had loads of other health benefits. Obviously, this sounded way too good to be true but when I did try it, it really had a almost life changing effect on me." It causes conversation to come about because people are like: ‘Is it PerfectTed or is it perfected?’ We really like the discourse that comes with it.They loved that we were local; it was actually an amazing moment where it was local supporting local. We've built a national brand off of local relationships." In fact, Marisa explained how they were told they'd be appearing on the show just days before they were due to travel from London to Manchester for filming.

On top of focusing on simple ingredients, PerfectTed also prioritizes transparency and sustainability in its business model—starting with its supply chain. Typically, a café would buy matcha from a domestic wholesaler, who had bought the product from a wholesaler in Japan. This multi–step chain often means less money for the farmer who originally grew the tea leaves, and it creates a disconnect between the business and suppliers that makes it difficult to verify ingredient quality. There’s no shortage of oys in the world but Jewish News takes every opportunity to celebrate the joys too, through projects like Night of Heroes, 40 Under 40 and other compelling countdowns that make the community kvell with pride. As a brand, we’re dedicated to making higher-quality, functional plant-based food & drink more accessible to all, and our drinks are just the start! In the 16 months since launching, PerfectTed has been retailed through 3,000 distribution points across nine countries, including 450 Holland & Barrett outlets in the UK. It has just become part of Tesco’s meal deal in 1,200 stores. PerfectTed, made up of Hampstead brothers Levi and Teddie and New Yorker Marisa, to appear on Dragons' Den to pitch their matcha energy drink, already being sold in Tesco (Image: PerfectTed) How’s that going? “We have been working with Steven very closely,” says Teddie. “He’s an amazing supporter of the brand. We’re such huge fans of him and it’s through listening to his podcast that we have been able to get through the challenges of the first 16 months in business, so to have him on board as an investor, mentor and adviser is immensely helpful.” He adds: “There’s definitely an extra element to our brand now as everything we do is a reflection of Steven and his own brand – we’re incredibly motivated to prove him right for investing in us.”

Caffeine from green tea lasts 4-6 hours, versus 1-2 hours from coffee or other energy drinks; the l-theanine in matcha regulates the absorption of caffeine into the body, helping to avoid the jitters and post-caffeine crash, it also stimulates the production of serotonin, dopamine and alpha brain waves, which help you feel less anxious and more relaxed; matcha is rich in antioxidants, and has one of the highest concentrations of any plant-based food (50x that of spinach); the combination of l-theanine and caffeine is scientifically proven to improve focus. The investment comes as PerfectTed launched in 1,200 Tesco stores and is included in the supermarket’s meal deal. This all-natural energy drink contains juicy pear, working in sweet harmony with a satisfying zing of ginger. But after going through all the effort to find high–quality matcha, adding unnecessary ingredients was a non–starter for PerfectTed. “If we were using additives and preservatives, we wouldn't be doing anything that innovative,” Teddie says. “There are other companies out there that have cut corners to take the easy way out.”Marisa and Teddie met on their first day at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). They both went on to have successful careers in finance – Marisa in real estate finance with stints at Starwood Capital Group and Teddie worked as an associate consultant at Bain & Company. It was while putting in the long hours that they discovered the benefits of matcha as a healthy alternative to coffee. Marisa added: "We want to be the largest natural energy and matcha brand globally. We're already making strong moves and already available in nine countries."

The caffeine from green tea lasts 4 to 6 hours, versus 1 to 2 hours from coffee or other energy drinks; the l-theanine in matcha regulates the absorption of caffeine into the body, helping to avoid the jitters and post-caffeine crash. This weekend, Teddie and Levi absolutely CRUSHED the Florence Marathon in just 3hrs 25mins (while I cheered them on, very comfortably, from the sidelines ☺️). Brothers Teddie and Levi originally began their foray into beverage making early in the pandemic, in an effort to support local health care workers. They bought a juice press and sold drinks from a stand in their neighborhood in London, which made them realize the importance of building a business that also has a social impact.Mr Bartlett said that “once in a while, you have entrepreneurs come into the den that you just have a huge degree of admiration for. And the journey you’re on as young entrepreneurs is a similar journey that I’ve been on as well.”
